The Buster Haas Minority Internship Program aims to increase the number of minority journalists working in newsrooms across Texas. The program is sponsored by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Association.
COMMITMENT FROM THE TAPME TO THE INTERN
The association will place the intern in a Texas newspaper for a 10-week summer internship at a Texas newspaper of 30,000 or smaller circulation. The student will receive a $3,000 stipend, plus $1,000 for living expenses. Upon successful completion of the internship, the intern will receive a $500 scholarship.
COMMITMENT FROM THE INTERN TO THE TAPME

A NOTE FROM THE PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Dear journalism professor:
We’d like to invite you to distribute the internship and scholarship application to your journalism students for the Buster Haas Minority Internship Program.
The Texas Associated Press Managing Editors each year offers internships and scholarships to deserving students through our program. The internship is named after the late Buster Haas, a Dallas Morning News assistant managing editor for 32 years and aims to increase the number of minority journalists working in newsrooms across Texas.
The Texas APME will place the student for a 10-week summer internship at a Texas newspaper of 30,000 or smaller circulation. The student will receive a $3,000 stipend, plus $1,000 for living expenses. Upon successful completion of the internship, the recipient will receive a $500 scholarship.
Newspapers such as the Laredo Morning Times, Abilene Reporter-News, New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, Bryan-College Station Eagle and others have participated.
Many of the Buster Haas interns have gone on to successful journalism careers and often describe their internship experience as rewarding and life-changing.
Please distribute the application with your students. The application deadline is Jan. 8, 2010. The Texas APME board will review the applications at its January board meeting and notify students afterward. The Texas APME awards about four to five internships/scholarships annually.
